Faith In Uncertainty: The Story Of America

America

“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

Amazing how such a simple statement can be so profound. Rarely are we given a roadmap to greatness – so our only viable choice is to have faith that answers to our questions will come. Faith in something greater than the individual, faith in the collective… that is the story of America.

Here’s a collection of thoughts from some of the most profound members of the American story.

“America was not built on fear. America was built on courage, on imagination and an unbeatable determination to do the job at hand.”– Harry S Truman

“I look forward to a great future for America – a future in which our country will match its military strength with our moral restraint, its wealth with our wisdom, its power with our purpose.” – John F. Kennedy

“The greatness of America lies not in being more enlightened than any other nation, but rather in her ability to repair her faults.” – Alexis de Tocqueville

“There is nothing wrong with America that faith, love of freedom, intelligence, and energy of her citizens cannot cure.” – Dwight D. Eisenhower

“Within the soul of America is freedom of mind and spirit in man. Here alone are the open windows through which pours the sunlight of the human spirit. Here alone is human dignity not a dream but an accomplishment. Perhaps it is not perfect, but it is more full in realization here than any other place in the world.” – Herbert Hoover

“When you get to know a lot of people, you make a great discovery. You find that no one group has a monopoly on looks, brains, goodness or anything else. It takes all the people – black and white, Catholic, Jewish and Protestant, recent immigrants and Mayflower descendants – to make up America.” – Judy Garland

Incredible wisdom in times of uncertainty.

As Abraham Lincoln said – “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” As an undeniably divided nation, I hope that we soon recognize that our strength is in continuity, and we are far from our best right now.

Lincoln also said – “My dream is of a place and a time where America will once again be seen as the last best hope of earth.” There’s no reason that we shouldn’t be. It’s time we show some faith and take the first step – even if we can’t see the whole staircase.
